BC/UPS, a local company founded in 1988 and working in partnership with UPS since 1998, has grown rapidly and now employs a staff of 70 Bermudans. Glen Smith, CEO, explains that close personal involvement by management is what sets his company apart from other international courier services on the island.
Smith says, “The difference with IBC/UPS is that I own the company myself and my home and cell-phone numbers are on my business card; I am always available. This company is owner-managed, price-conscious, and flexible.” |

IBC/UPS has distinguished itself in the Bermuda market through its superior service and many value-added options. As Smith points out, “We can offer our clients the latest pick-up time on the island. We are very flexible and can offer same-day or next-day service Monday through Friday. We have pick-up service and have a 727 flying daily between the US and Bermuda. We also have the extra advantage of working with UPS, which allows us to provide 8:00 am delivery and great flexibility.”

Another of Smith’s innovations is a separate company, Zip-X, which he founded to provide US addresses for residents of Bermuda. “For example, local clients are able to order from different catalogues in the States and have items delivered to an address in New York, and then we bring the ordered items to Bermuda and deliver them here, at a very reasonable cost,” Smith explains. Zip-X already has 5,500 regular users. Smith says he plans to launch another company, Zip-Freight, which will “compete with the boat services in Bermuda. We will provide middle-of-the-road pricing and get the goods here much faster than a boat would.”
Smith is committed to working only with local staff, and has developed training programs to help employees advance and to ensure that most staff members can handle many different jobs. He is very positive about Bermuda. He says, “This is a very safe place and a wonderful location to bring up a family. The quality of life is excellent. We have a great infrastructure and superior schools, services and restaurants. We are very proud of our heritage.” |
